14 世纪中期，黑死病在欧洲肆虐，当时意大利威尼斯是重要的贸易港口。为了防止疫情传入，威尼斯规定所有来自疫区的船只必须在港口外停留 40 天，确认船上人员无感染后才可入境。
这个隔离期在意大利语中被称为 “quaranta giorni”，意为 “40 天”。后来逐渐简化为 “quarantine”，并被英语吸收，泛指 “隔离期”。
单词 quarantine、isolation 和 segregation 都与 “隔离” 相关，但含义有别：
